The Joy Of Watching The Birds.

For me,  the greatest joy of the spring and summer  seasons, are the visiting birds. Even though their visit is short, I enjoy the warm breezes carrying the voices of song birds, within it’s soft caress.   Strolling  within a wooded area, trying to identify  birds, as each sings its merry tune.  Hearing those of regular migratory birds thrushes, warblers, woodpeckers  and some sounds that are unfamiliar.  However until I do find out what kind they are, my imagination paints the feathers in beautiful bright colors.   It is a treat to be witness to nature in such an delightful way, better than listening to  any piped music, winter is the time for that, when trees stand bare or with pine needles covered in quite snow, the  hardy residents of squirrels, crows, ravens, magpies nuthatches, chickadees and others, busy and hiding within their branches.

Enjoying grass seeds

Summer though is so different, a world of color, song and abundant load highway traffic.  With the Robins the first to arrive and the first who’s eggs crack open in spring, by the end of May little chicks are out of the nest scratching in the mud for food.  By June the young of many bird spices, are hopping around in the tall grasses and shrubs at ground level feeding on seeds and wee beasties.  It does my heart good to savour  the  mixed buzz of insects, butterflies flitting around flowers, as well as the many styles of brown sparrow, and may be a kind of black bird.

So as the “weeds” grow in my garden, they are enjoyed by the birds who visit to dine on the smorgasbord, of treats that are also attracted to the unkempt yard.  Gazing at this from my deck brings me to the conclusion not to mow.
