Migratory Birds, Bringing The Birds To You

 Migratory Birds

Migratory Birds there are many species of them all around the world, Migratory Birds are sensitive to climates and environmental changes.  Spring time and summer a lot of birds spend their time flying from one place to another to breed, and back again.  This uses a lot of energy and having a bird feeder handy will help replenish their energy.  The most common migratory bird route is from south to north, the birds do this mainly because it’s genetically programed and when migrating they take advantage of the longer daylight hours enjoyed in the north.  With some of the  seasonal birds not all of one species leave, this is a partial migration American Robins do this.  Many of these visiting avains will nest in places that they go to year after year, however some will be looking for new homes, if you happen to have a bird house in your garden you may be lucky enough to have them nest there.

Birds are beautiful to watch and indeed there are thousands of bird watchers all around the world, some countries have a wide variety of  colourful birds to see, any birdwatchers in the Northern climes are most gratified when summer time rolls around, and they get to see the wonderful avian visitors again.  In the warmer the climates it usually follows that the birds are more colourful, a lot of these stay in the warmer climates all year round like parrots only two species migrate and  sadly one of them the Orange Bellied Parrot is endangered.

Purple Martin

Some of us just gaze admiringly at the glorious pictures submitted to frickr of painted buntings macaws and other such brightly feathered avians.  Thanks to the skilled photographs who are able to capture these delights for us.

Whilst enjoying the more subdued colors of the native birds in our own area, it is a pleasure to watch them splashing in a bird bath, visiting the bird feeder or popping in and out of a bird house feeding their young, if we are lucky enough to have some nesting near us.

Yellow headed blackbirds

Birds visit the North from many areas in their migration during summer time,  in summer it is most gratifying to see the mountain blue bird making it’s nest on one of my regular walks.  The tiny humming bird is also a welcomed summer visitor buzzing around the flowering window boxes, along with the yellow headed blackbird on the prairies,  barn swallows dip in and out of eves and trees, purple martins swooping for insects, the Yellow crowned kinglet with it’s tiny body and big song enough to lift my spirits any day, and my personal favourite the Red winged black bird who likes to nest near water and has a sound unlike any other migratory bird

Green Change : Tar sands mines are ‘a death trap’ for migratory birds

About half of America’s migratory birds fly from destinations as far-flung as Chile to nest in Canada’s boreal forest. In Alberta, that forest lies above tar sands that contain oil.
